An example of the legacy of the Fujinkai’s spirit in supporting the “temple is its participation in the 1918 moving of the boulder that would be the cornerstone for the main temple building. A half-ton boulder was transported by hand-drawn wooden carriage from the temple building on Fort Lane:

“. . . the procession set out, and every organization was represented,” with the largest contingent being ‘the four hundred members of Fujinkai, led by Mrs. Kiyoko Imamura, each one in a formal montsuki kimono, black with white crest, each grasping over her shoulder a portion of the braided red and white silk ropes to help pull the carriage bearing the corner stone from the old temple to the site of the new one.” (A Grateful Past, A Promising Future, The First 100 Years of Honpa Hongwanji in Hawaii, 1989, Honolulu, HI)

In February, 1952, to encourage the participation and support of the younger English-speaking members of Hawaii Betsuin, the Upasika Society was founded by Aiko Fujitani, wife of Bishop Kodo Fujitani.

After the 50th anniversary of Upasika Society in 2002, the Hawaii Betsuin Fujinkai and Upasika Society united to establish the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin Buddhist Women’s Association.

Today, Hawaii Betsuin BWA members serve as vibrant leaders and supporters of the temple.

They are involved in programs that encourage deeper awareness of Buddhist interdependence, compassion, and gratitude. They assist the temple in its activities and provide service to the community. BWA members support each other, creating opportunities to enjoy friendship and fellowship as they participate in educational, recreational, and creative activities. Through participating in regional gatherings and world conventions, Hawaii Betsuin BWA helps strengthen connections among BWA members worldwide.

The BWA Pledge is recited at each Hawaii Betsuin BWA quarterly meeting. The pledge states what is of core importance to BWA members.

Guided by Shinran Shonin’s teachings, we share Amida Buddha’s heartfelt wish for the happiness of all beings.

We cherish listening deeply to the Dharma and endeavor to realize a world in which all are equally affirmed and valued.
